Autophagy in human health and diseases

Autophagy contributes to basal physiological homeostasis by regenerating metabolic precursors and clearing subcellular debris. Deregulation of this process has been implicated in many diseases, including cancer, metabolic and neuro degenerative disorders, and cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Shown above, the diagram reports the publication trends for the study of autophagy. However, clinical targeting of autophagy in human diseases is limited due to an obscure of how autophagy contributes to pathogenesis. Exploration of the mechanisms underlying this autophagy process may lead to the identification of new targets for clinical utility.
